Entering the Loop
-We are entering the loop. If we want to help people, we are going to need to figure out how to turn this shit into fertilizer.
Courage
-It is dancing along the lines of your comfort zone. Never knowing how people will respond to you, until they do.
What is “Doing” Healing?
-Healing doesn’t just happen over time. It’s something you have to be determined to do, face and work at it.
Nothing is Ever Going to be Perfect
-People are flawed. Human systems are flawed. Grace and forgiveness for people being people.
Cover Your Zone
-“If not you, then who?”
Disappointment
– Finding out how systems work can be disappointing and then freeing.
The Controlled Burn
–A controlled burn is setting fires intentionally to maintain the health of a forest. This is how I view litigation. We need to take our cases to court or to a human rights tribunal to maintain the health of a society.
Planting Seeds
-Systemic advocacy is all about planting seeds. You’ll never truly know your impact.
Embracing Grief
-Anger is for things you can change. Grief is for things you cannot.
Suffering is Not Your Identity
– You don’t need to take on suffering as an identity to help people. It’s what you experienced and survived, but not who you are.
Under the Microscope
-Don’t examine the ant that is part of the anthill. Be the hawk flying above that is spending years surveying the changing landscape.
Sometimes You Just Need to Laugh
– Systems can be absolutely ridiculous beyond measure.
Consistency
– It’s the little things that we choose to do every day that really add up
Move from “let it go” to “park it for now”
– You won’t be able to solve everything at once. You don’t need to let the really frustrating things go; just park it for now, and return to it again later when things shift/change and the timing is better.
What is in our Control?
-Creating a visual to remind us what is in our control and what is not.
How to use Rituals as part of your Advocacy
– How to use rituals to define advocacy time and turn off our brains from advocacy to focus on other enjoyable life activities.
Isolation and Advocacy
– How important it is for our own mental health to find people who are advocating in similar areas as us.
The Pace of Change
– Coping with things not moving as fast as we would like them.
